Life in the Golden Triangle Region

The Golden Triangle Region is comprised of three counties in Mississippi, Clay, Lowndes, and

Oktibbeha. All three offer a variety of activities for regional residents. Each county has its own

sports complex, performing arts theatre, golf courses and outdoor recreation options.

Clay County

West Point

West Point  lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 45 and Mississippi Highway 50. West Point is characterized by its mix of urban and rural areas, with a diverse population. Historically, West Point's economy has been tied to industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation.


West Point's strategic location at the intersection of major highways has historically made it an important transportation hub in the region. In addition to being a prime location for intrastate travel, the available land and established infrastructure has allowed West Point to become a desirable "turn-key" spot for industries to establish.


Beyond the heavy industry, West Point has many historical sites, landmarks, and attractions that showcase its history and southern charm. Two of the attractions that bring people from all over the country are the Old Wavery Golf Course and Mossy Oak Golf Course. These two Top 100 Courses ranked by both Golf Digest and Golfweek are known for their scenic beauty, challenging design, and connection to Southern hospitality.

Lowndes County

Columbus

Columbus is the county seat of Lowndes County and is situated near the Alabama state line. The city lies along the Tombigbee River and is known for its historic downtown area. Columbus has a diverse economy that includes industries like manufacturing, healthcare, education, and retail. The city's historic connection to the river has played a role in its economic development.


Convenient access to high-quality US and state highways, the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway, and a lengthy rail system allows for easy interstate connectivity. With a surplus of utilities, infrastructure and land, Lowndes County has become one of the fastest growing locations for new and expanding industries. 


Columbus is renowned for its rich historical heritage. The city boasts a treasure trove of well-preserved antebellum architecture, historic districts, and landmarks that offer a glimpse into its past. This historical significance has earned Columbus a reputation as a place where the old South's charm and history come to life.

Oktibbeha County

Starkville

Starkville is the county seat of Oktibbeha County and is known for being the home of Mississippi State University (MSU).


Starkville's economy is heavily influenced by MSU, which brings in a significant student population and contributes to the city's cultural and economic vibrancy. The university's research programs and collaborations with local businesses also impact the local economy. Agriculture, particularly cotton and soybeans, has historically been important to the region's economy.


Mississippi State University is a comprehensive, doctoral

degree-granting research institution with a nationally and

internationally diverse student body. Mississippi State

is nationally ranked in research and development in the

sciences and engineering and is home to the Bagley College of

Engineering.
