Golden Triangle Achieves Certification as ACT WorkReady Community

Golden Triangle, Mississippi – The Golden Triangle region announced today that it has met all criteria to become a certified ACT Work Ready Community. This achievement caps a 2-year process and begins a two-year growth and maintenance phase to retain certification.

“Achieving the Work Ready Certification is a “win-win” for area students and businesses alike. Students complete WorkKeys Assessments in Applied Mathematics, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents, which allows them to demonstrate proficiency in those essential areas,” said Workforce Project Manager Dr. Jim Huerkamp. “In turn, area businesses use the WorkKeys Assessment to provide an unbiased measure of a prospective employees’ foundational skills. From a community perspective, Work Ready Certification proves that our local citizens are willing and able to provide the skilled labor current and future industry partners’ desire.”

The initiative was led by East Mississippi Community College and the Golden Triangle Development LINK, with area leaders from Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha counties assisting throughout the certification process. The Workforce Services department at EMCC has been providing the WorkKeys assessment for more than a decade, making the certification process easy with a steady supply of candidates with their National Career Readiness Certificate.

“This certification communicates to potential and current employers in our region that we’re committed to providing a skilled and dedicated workforce in the Golden Triangle,” said Joe Max Higgins, Jr., CEO of the GTR LINK. “Even more, it shows exactly how successful we can be when we work together on goals that benefit growth in our region.”

The ACT Work Ready Communities initiative is designed to assist a particular area, region or state in developing its workforce pipeline to provide skilled workers for employers. The framework allows each participating community to quantify and improve the skill levels of its workforce through a standardized workforce skill credential—the ACT WorkKeys® National Career Readiness Certificate™—supported by data updated online by ACT on a monthly basis.

“We congratulate the Golden Triangle for this significant achievement, and we are proud to add them to our growing list of certified ACT Work Ready Communities,” said Tony Garife, ACT Regional Manager, Workforce Initiatives. “The progressive thinking and positive action demonstrated by the region’s leadership shows an enduring commitment to growing the economic success of the area. As a result, local residents will begin seeing the important linkage between education and workforce development and the value of matching people to jobs.”
